FAQ

Questions buyers ask

How does UV disinfection work?

Water passes through a stainless steel reactor where UV-C light at 254 nm damages the genetic material of bacteria and viruses so they cannot multiply. No chemicals are added and no residue is left in the water. The water's taste and chemistry do not change, which suits drinking, process and irrigation water alike.

When is ozone used instead of, or with, UV?

Ozone is a strong oxidant. Besides disinfection it removes colour, odour and organics, then reverts to oxygen with no residue. UV only disinfects. Some systems use ozone for oxidation and UV for final disinfection. The choice depends on the water quality and on whether a disinfectant residual is needed downstream.

What water quality does UV need?

UV works best on clear water. Turbidity, iron, manganese and colour shield microorganisms from the light, so filtration or other pre-treatment is placed ahead of the reactor. The reactor is sized from the flow and the water's UV transmittance, measured from a sample.

What maintenance does a UV system need?

UV lamps lose output with time and are replaced at set intervals. The quartz sleeves around the lamps are cleaned to keep the light reaching the water. Ozone generators need checks on the feed gas and the generator itself, at intervals set in the design.
