When you buy a water treatment plant you are buying more than equipment. You are buying a design, the quality of its construction, and years of support. In the Gulf, plants are sold by companies that manufacture them and by companies that resell or assemble equipment made by others. Both can deliver good results. This article looks at what changes between the two, so you can ask the right questions whichever route you choose.
Who does what
A manufacturer designs the system, engineers the treatment process, builds the skids, vessels and panels, tests them and supports them in service. A trader buys equipment or complete units from others and sells them on, sometimes adding local installation and service. Many suppliers sit somewhere in between, designing some parts and buying others.
For transparency: AFG is the manufacturer of every system on this site. Manufacturing and engineering are in Antalya, Türkiye, and AFG Dubai is its UAE office, handling quotes, project contact and support. You can read more on our about page.
Why it can matter
Design responsibility
Water treatment is not catalogue equipment. A plant has to be engineered around a particular water analysis, capacity and use. When the company that designs the plant also builds it, the design and the construction stay together, and the same engineers who chose the process can answer questions about it. When design and supply are split between parties, it is worth clarifying who is responsible if the plant does not perform.
Drawings and documentation
Ask who holds the process design, the drawings and the control program. Future modifications, troubleshooting and expansions are easier when that information is available from a single source.
Spare parts
Membranes, pumps, valves, media and cartridges all need replacing over a plant's life. A manufacturer knows exactly which parts went into each system. A trader may rely on the original supplier, which can work well if that relationship is stable. Either way, ask how spares are identified and supplied.
Changes and expansions
Demand grows and water changes. Adding capacity, changing pre-treatment or upgrading controls is simpler when the supplier understands the whole design. AFG's process runs from water analysis through design, manufacturing, commissioning and support, which keeps these steps connected.
What traders can offer
Being fair, a good trader can offer a wide choice of brands, local stock and fast response. For small, standard items such as cartridges or simple softeners, buying through a trader is often perfectly sensible. The questions above matter most for engineered plants such as RO, SWRO and wastewater treatment.
Commissioning and training
A plant is only as good as its start-up. Commissioning checks that every stage works as designed with the real water, sets the dosing rates and records the baseline performance. Training gives operators the knowledge to run, clean and adjust the plant. Ask who carries out these steps and what documentation the operators receive.
Distance and support
Distance between the factory and the site is not a problem in itself, as long as quotes, project contact, spare parts and service are clearly organised. For AFG, that role in the UAE is taken by AFG Dubai, which passes each project's details to the engineers in Antalya who designed the system.
Questions to ask any supplier
- Where is the system designed and where is it built?
- Who is responsible for process performance?
- Who holds the drawings and control software?
- How are spare parts identified and supplied over the plant's life?
- Who commissions the plant and trains the operators?
- Who do we call when something changes?
The bottom line
The right supplier is the one who can answer those questions clearly for your project. If you are in Dubai, elsewhere in the UAE or in one of the GCC countries we supply, AFG Dubai is the contact for systems designed and manufactured by AFG.
